Glossary

Terminology

Upsell, cross-sell, FBT, bundle — these terms get thrown around interchangeably across the e-commerce industry. Inside Summer Upsell, each one has a specific meaning and a specific surface where it lives.

Funnel terminology

Upsell

Standard definition: encouraging a shopper to buy a more expensive version, upgrade or premium edition of the product they're considering.

In Summer Upsell: the dedicated Upsell widget (Single upgrade / Tier comparison / Inline banner) is built for true upsells. Most other widgets handle cross-sells.

Cross-sell

Standard definition: recommending a related or complementary product — e.g. a phone case when the shopper is buying a phone.

In Summer Upsell: the dedicated Cross-sell widget (Grid / Stack / Carousel) plus most other widgets. "Cross-sell" also names the Popup and Cart Popup layout where each product has its own Add button.

FBT (Frequently Bought Together)

Standard definition: a bundled cross-sell that pairs the trigger product with several related items in a single Add to cart action.

In Summer Upsell: three flavors:

  • Classic FBT — checkbox list, selectable, with a live total.
  • FBT Full Width — full-width card carousel.
  • Bundle (Amazon FBT) — image strip with + separators and one Add all button.

Bundle

Standard definition: a kit or set sold together, often at a discount versus the sum of its parts.

In Summer Upsell: the Bundle campaign type uses the Amazon FBT layout; the merchant defines the contents and the discount, and the shopper can still untick items.

Add-on

Standard definition: a small-ticket complementary item — warranty, gift wrap, samples.

In Summer Upsell: the Product Add-on widget (List, Card, Toggle) renders these on the product page. The Add-ons layout in Popup and Cart Popup serves the same role at different moments in the funnel.

Funnel placement terminology

PDP (Product Detail Page)

The product page itself. Seven widget types render here: Upsell, Cross-sell, FBT, FBT Full Width, Bundle, Popup and Product Add-on.

Cart

Either the cart drawer or the dedicated cart page. Two widgets target this surface: In-Cart Upsell (always visible, inline) and Cart Popup (overlay on the Checkout click).

Post-purchase

The Shopify thank-you page shown right after checkout and the order status page in the customer account.

Widget mechanics

Trigger product

The product on whose page (or whose presence in the cart / order) a campaign should render. Configured on the Offer tab via All products (Any cart / Any order for cart and post-purchase widgets), Specific products or Specific collections.

Offer product

The product(s) the widget recommends when triggered. Comes from one of three sources: Specific products, Automated recommendations or Summer AI.

Popup triggers

  • Add to cart — the Popup widget opens right after a trigger product is added to the cart on the product page.
  • Checkout click — the Cart Popup opens when the shopper clicks Checkout on the cart page or drawer.

Recommendation sources

Specific products

The merchant hand-picks the offer products in the campaign editor.

Automated recommendations

Shopify's own product recommendations for the trigger product — Related or Complementary (configured in Search & Discovery). No credits consumed. Available on every plan.

Summer AI (powered by ChatGPT)

AI-ranked picks from your catalog, generated in the editor and saved on the campaign. One credit per product returned. Allowance: 20 per cycle on Starter Pro, 1,000 on Pro.

Metrics

AOV (Average Order Value)

Total revenue ÷ total orders. The headline metric every upsell widget tries to lift.

Conversion rate

Conversions ÷ impressions for a campaign — the share of widget views that ended in a purchased product.

Impressions

Number of times the widget was shown on a storefront page. Counted once per campaign per page view, when the widget scrolls into view.

Conversions

Products added through the widget that were then bought. Counted from paid orders, not from browser events alone.

Attributed orders

Paid orders that include at least one product added through a Summer widget. This is what counts toward the plan limit.

Storefront integration

App embed

The theme setting that loads the Summer Upsell script on every page. Required for any widget to render. Enabled under App embeds in the theme editor.

Theme app block

A per-widget block (e.g. ✨ Summer: FBT Bundle) that you add to a template in the theme editor. The block tells Shopify where the widget renders; the campaign in the admin tells Summer Upsell what to render.

Discount modes

Summer discount functions (an automatic or code-based Shopify discount managed by the app), dynamic (a single-use code minted per shopper), or an existing code. All of them apply only to products added through the widget. See Discounts.

Plan-specific terminology

Non-performing campaigns

Pro-plan panel on the Analytics page that lists active campaigns with at least 20 impressions and a conversion rate under 1%, so you can review, edit or pause them.

Auto-upgrade

The notice that appears when attributed orders exceed the plan limit, with a Shopify-hosted approval for the next plan up.

Summer AI credits

1 credit = 1 product returned by Summer AI. Charged when you click Generate in the editor, never on storefront views. Allowance: 20 per cycle on Starter Pro, 1,000 on Pro; credits reset every 30 days.

Plan-aware downgrade

When a plan no longer covers a campaign's AI source, the widget falls back as it renders: Summer AI → Automated recommendations → Specific products. The campaign's configuration is kept, so re-upgrading restores the original source.

Publish checks

The Test campaign in store checklist that runs when you publish: campaign active, products valid and available, app embed enabled, widget block added.
